Lupo & Ubrique: The Hidden Hands of Ubrique’s Leather Mastery

Lupo Barcelona's June Bag

Watch the videos here:

Taking on the Rip My Bag Challenge with Lupo Barcelona! Discover the hidden craftsmanship of Ubrique and see if this leather bag stands the ultimate test.

A Journey Through Leather Excellence

At this point, I have dissected hundreds of leather crafts from all over the world. Through this journey, one location consistently stood out for its exceptional workmanship—Ubrique, Spain. The craftsmanship from this small mountain village was so impressive that it not only led to my most successful video on this channel but also convinced me to move my entire family here.

Since last fall, I have been living in Ubrique, and every day, I am amazed by the depth of leather knowledge and the close-knit connection this town has to the craft. Nowhere else have I seen such an intense concentration of artisans with this level of experience and skill. It’s no wonder that high-end luxury brands have quietly sourced their leather goods from here for decades, treating Ubrique as one of their best-kept secrets.

DISCLAIMER: The “Rip My Bag Challenge” is a review series that tests leather products’ quality, price, and craftsmanship. While the brand supports the challenge financially, my opinions stay fair, unbiased, and truthful. Products featured are purchased anonymously without brand involvement. Brands have no control over content, publishing dates, or the review process.

The Ubrique Name: A Guarantee or Just a Label?

Over time, I’ve noticed brands proudly advertising that their products are made in Ubrique. While many of them live up to the town’s reputation, I have also come across a few disappointing examples. Not everything with an "Ubrique-made" label automatically guarantees top-tier quality.

Recently, a Spanish brand from Barcelona challenged me to put their bag to the test. They were bold enough to pay me to purchase one of their bags anonymously and review it without knowing what I would find or say. Naturally, I accepted the challenge.

The June Bag: First Impressions

I chose the June bag, a sculpted design that immediately caught my eye on their website. When the package arrived, my excitement and anxiety peaked. Would Ubrique’s craftsmanship shine through, or would this bag fall short?

Upon unboxing, my first impression was largely positive. The leather felt incredible—one of my favorite local materials, frequently used by fellow brands here. The craftsmanship was fashion-forward, and the bag's structure was undeniably impressive. However, a few details made me pause.

The Good, the Bad, and the Craftsmanship

From the moment I unboxed the bag, I was impressed by the leather quality—it was exactly what I expected from Ubrique: top-notch artisan material with a luxurious feel. The structural execution also stood out, particularly the outer shell, which maintained a rigid and well-defined form. This was achieved by layering four different reinforcement materials under the leather, a level of precision rarely found outside of Ubrique. Another highlight was the value for money; after doing a quick calculation of the brand’s pricing strategy (a 3x multiplier), it became clear that this bag offers great value for its price.

However, there were areas that could use some refinement. The sculpted silhouette, while visually striking, was slightly marred by small bumps on both sides of the bag. Though not a major flaw, they were noticeable—especially on a light-colored bag—and disrupted the otherwise clean shape. A minor structural adjustment could easily resolve this issue. Additionally, the edge paint left something to be desired. Given Ubrique’s reputation for meticulous finishing, I expected a higher level of craftsmanship in this detail. With a bit more attention to these areas, the bag could reach its full potential and truly stand alongside high-end luxury competitors.

The Final Verdict

After dissecting the bag, I was reassured about the brand’s commitment to quality. While there were minor imperfections, the craftsmanship was still strong, and the bag had serious potential. If the brand refines its structural reinforcements and improves the edge paint, this bag could stand toe-to-toe with legacy luxury labels.

Ultimately, this experience reinforced my belief that who makes a bag is more important than where it is made. While certain locations carry strong reputations for craftsmanship, it’s the mindset of the brand and the skillset of the artisans that truly define a product’s quality.

Looking Ahead: Lupo Barcelona

This dissection sparked my curiosity about other sculpted designs, particularly those from Lupo, another Barcelona-based brand. Their unique silhouettes caught my attention while browsing, so I’ve added their store to my must-visit list for my next trip to the city.

I hope you found this review insightful! As always, drop your brand recommendations below so we can continue uncovering value in the leatherverse. Until next time, stay leathertained!
